    General Guidelines
  1. Do not compete or spectate if you are sick; stay home and out of public places.
  2. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before and after competing and/or spectating at an event.
  3. Maintain 6’ physical distancing while spectating.
  4. Some events by their nature do not allow physical distancing; understand the inherent risks of entering this event.
  5. Feel free to wear a cloth mask.
  6. Bring your own water, seating and shade.

Due to the unknowns of indoor group gatherings due to COVID-19, the Big Sky State Games has decided to move all volleyball to an outdoor competition. Please review the new options for youth, scholastic and adult volleyball available for Grass Doubles & Triples and Grass Quads.

    Rules for Volleyball 4 v 4

  • Pool & Bracket sets will be 21 -21 (15) No cap on scoring.
  • A team may consist of 5 (4 players and 1 sub); however, they can begin and end a match with 3. **Co-Ed: number of men on the court cannot exceed number of women.**
  • Subs can only be for the same person per set.
  • Teams do not have to rotate, other than keeping correct serving order.
  • One toss for adults/high school on the serve, middle school is allowed two tosses.
  • If a team is found to have incorrect serving order, it is side out and loss of all points by that server.
  • Serve receive must be taken with a forearm pass.
  • Consecutive Contacts are allowed on the first ball over the net.
  • Overhead contact of the serve must have hands together to be legal.
  • When setting the ball over the net, players must set the ball directly forward or directly backwards. No open hand tips.
  • Contact with any part of the net is a violation at any time.
  • No centerline rule, though incidental contact is allowed.
  • You are not allowed to enter the adjacent court to pursue a ball.
  • All sets are self officiated, until semi and final rounds, if permitted. Therefore, all teams are required to call their own violations and are expected to be honest and keep a high level of sportsmanship at all times. The captain will be responsible for his or her team and help with calls when necessary.
  • In the absence of antennas, the poles will act as antennas for all purposes.
  • Athletes are encouraged to play in appropriate athletic shoes or barefoot. No cleats allowed.
  • No jewelry. This includes watches, fitbits, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, nose rings, etc.
  • No Ghost Rule.
  • Off teams will be required to scorekeep.
  • Subs can only be for the same person per set.
  • Court size is 60’ X 30’
