Commissioners

Exel 'Ekkie' Wedul has served as Big Sky State Games Commissioner for over 20 years. Ekkie has participated in many Big Sky State Games Half Marathons, winning numerous medals along the way. Ekkie was named 1994 Big Sky State Games Athlete of the Year.

Bill Harrington is the owner of Laurel Hearing Aid and is a member of the Yellowstone Rim Runners. Bill has been participating in Road Racing for over 30 years. He has volunteered at the Big Sky State Games for 30 years. Bill has a great crew of volunteers who work with him each year. His wife, Kathy, handles the water stops.

State Games of America Qualifier

All 2017 and 2018 Big Sky State Games medalists, and some 2019 medalists are eligible to compete in the
2019 State Games of America in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Current sports are:

Archery, Basketball, Biathlon, Billiards, Bowling, Cycling (Mountain Bike), Disc Golf, Equestrian, Fencing, Figure Skating, Golf, Ice Hockey, Karate, Lacrosse, Pickleball, Racquetball, Road Race, Shooting, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tae Kwon Do/Judo, Tennis, Track & Field, Ultimate Frisbee, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.

Special Information

USATF Information

The 5K and 10K will also serve as the USA Track and Field and Masters Association Champtionships. The top athletes that are USATF members by July 20, 2018 will be recognized as Montana Association Champions. Age groups are 18-40 (open) and in 5 year increments 41-100 (masters). USATF membership may be obtained at www.usatf.org. USATF awards will be mailed after the race. BSSG medals will be handed out onsite, then will be taken to the consession stand at Daylis Stadium to be handed out all weekend.

Registration

DO NOT MAIL YOUR ENTRY FORMS AFTER Friday, July 13. After July 13, register online or take entry to the Big Sky State Games Office. For individuals who sign up after July 16, Opening Ceremonies tickets will be at the Information/Will Call booth at Daylis Stadium night of Opening Ceremonies.

Race Number

Each participant will receive a bib number which also has your timing chip attached to the back of the bib. Bib must be worn on the front of your shirt. Bib numbers for all races may be picked up Friday, July 20 at Daylis Stadium near the t-shirt tent from 5:30 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. and at Rivers Edge Lots the morning of Saturday, July 21 from 6:00 a.m. - 7:15 a.m.

Other Information
  • The visible possession or use by athletes of video or audio devices will not be permitted during the races.
  • No DOGS!
  • All runners must finish by 10:00 am.
  • **Due to extreme weather conditions in July, participants must understand the risk of running in the heat and run at their own risk**
Event Cancellation

The Race Commissioner reserves the right to modify, change, or cancel the Road Race for weather and/or safety conditions.

Courses

Marathon Run

The Start & Finish are located just off Thiel Road about ¼ mile east of HWY 212, on East Lauralee Lane. The race is run from there on Thiel Road/River Road going east with the turn-around almost to Duck Creek Road. The course is slightly rolling hills, winding along the Yellowstone River, 6.5 miles + 71 1/4 yards out, and the same distance back.

10K Run

The Start & Finish are located just off Thiel Road about ¼ mile east of HWY 212, on East Lauralee Lane. The race is run from there on Thiel Road/River Road going east 3.1 miles out and 3.1 miles back, on slightly rolling hills winding along the Yellowstone River.

5K Run

The Start & Finish are located just off Thiel Road about ¼ mile east of HWY 212, on East Lauralee Lane. The race is run from there on Thiel Road/River Road 1.55 miles out and 1.55 mile back, on a mostly flat course along the Yellowstone River.

*NEW* Race Site

Road races are entirely on paved roads. Start & finish on East Lauralee Lane off Theil Road (River Road) 1/4 mile south of Laurel. On the south bank of the Yellowstone River: exit 434 (Laurel) off I-90 and drive south over the river.

PLEASE PARK YOUR CARS AT THE START OF THE RACE!, on East Lauralee Lane not on Thiel Road.
