Exel 'Ekkie' Wedul has served as Big Sky State Games Commissioner for over 20 years. Ekkie has participated in many Big Sky State Games Half Marathons, winning numerous medals along the way. Ekkie was named 1994 Big Sky State Games Athlete of the Year.

Bill Harrington is the owner of Laurel Hearing Aid and is a member of the Yellowstone Rim Runners. Bill has been participating in Road Racing for over 30 years. He has volunteered at the Big Sky State Games for 30 years. Bill has a great crew of volunteers who work with him each year. His wife, Kathy, handles the water stops.

State Games of America Qualifier

All 2015 and 2016 Big Sky State Games medalists, and some 2017 medalists are eligible to compete in the
2017 State Games of America in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Current sports are:

Archery, Basketball, Billiards, Bowling, Cycling, Disc Golf, Fencing, Figure Skating, Flag Football, Golf, Ice Hockey, Karate, Lacrosse, Pickleball, Racquetball, Road Race, Rollerskating, Shooting, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tae Kwon Do/Judo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track & Field, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.

Special Information

USATF Information

The 5K and 10K will also serve as the USA Track and Field and Masters Association Champtionships. The top athletes that are USATF members by July 14, 2017 will be recognized as Montana Association Champions. Age groups are 18-40 (open) and in 5 year increments 41-100 (masters). USATF membership may be obtained at www.usatf.org. USATF awards will be mailed after the race. BSSG medals will be handed out onsite, then will be taken to the consession stand at Daylis Stadium to be handed out all weekend.

Registration

DO NOT MAIL YOUR ENTRY FORMS AFTER Friday, July 7. After July 7, register online or take entry to the Big Sky State Games Office. For individuals who sign up after July 13, Opening Ceremonies tickets will be at the Information/Will Call booth at Daylis Stadium night of Opening Ceremonies.

RRCA Championship

The BSSG 5K Road Race is the RRCA State Championship event. Everyone who enters the 5K is automatically in the championship. No additional registration is required.


Race Number

Each participant will receive a bib number which also has your timing chip attached to the back of the bib. Bib must be worn on the front of your shirt. Bib numbers for all races may be picked up Friday, July 14 at Daylis Stadium near the t-shirt tent from 5:30 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. and at Dave Giddeon Trucking the morning of Saturday, July 15 from 6:00 a.m. - 7:15 a.m.

Other Information
  • The visible possession or use by athletes of video or audio devices will not be permitted during the races.
  • No DOGS!
  • All runners must finish by 10:00 am.
  • **Due to extreme weather conditions in July, participants must understand the risk of running in the heat and run at their own risk**
Event Cancellation

The Race Commissioner reserves the right to modify, change, or cancel the Road Race for weather and/or safety conditions.

Courses

10K Run

The Start & Finish are on Thiel Road/River Road between Hwy 212 and Duck Creek Road at Dave Giddeons Trucking. 3.1 miles out & 3.1 miles back, slightly rolling hills, winding along the Yellowstone River.

5K Run (RRCA State Championship)

The Start & Finish are on Thiel Road/River Road between Hwy 212 and Duck Creek Road at Dave Giddeons Trucking. 1.55 miles out & 1.55 miles back, slightly rolling hills, winding along the Yellowstone River.

Race Site

Road races are entirely on paved roads. Start & finish at Dave Giddeons Trucking near RiverSIDE Park. RiverSIDE Park is located south of Laurel on the east side of Highway 212/310, on the south bank of the Yellowstone River: exit 434 (Laurel) off I-90 and drive south over the river.

PLEASE PARK YOUR CARS IN RIVERSIDE PARK, not on Thiel Road. Walk on the shoulder next to Highway 212/310, not behind the businesses.
