Rules and Regulations


There will be one round of changes for each studio. A $15.00 fee for each change made after the initial round of allowed changes. This fee must be paid by credit card at the time the change(s) is made. NO CHANGES WILL BE PERMITTED AT THE COMPETITION WITHOUT THE COMMISSIONERS APPROVAL.


We still accept paper entries but prefer all entries registered online to ensure accurate information. Entries must be submitted by . Late Entry: $50 late fee will be assessed for entries postmarked from March 29 to April 4th. No Entry Forms will be accepted after April 4th. Please call the Big Sky State Games office if you need to submit entries after the deadline.

By registering and participating in a Big Sky State Games event, you agree to allow us to send you emails regarding your entries, rules, schedules, and other Big Sky State Games related information. Your email will never be sold to a third party.

Upon payment for your routines, you will receive an email confirmation of your entries. Each dance athlete will also receive a confirmation email with name, dance event(s), and waiver agreement. Waiver agreements must be agreed to upon competition day or they are not allowed to perform. Each studio that has completed registration by the deadline will receive one round of complimentary changes.

  • Each Studio/School must fill out the Master Studio Application. One per studio/school.
  • Each dancer must provide their individual information and the appropriate signature on the Entry Form. (please make additional copies if needed)
  • One Master Routine Roster per dance number. (please make additional copies if needed)

If you cannot perform at your scheduled time due to costume change, prior arrangements must be made so that you can perform without penalty. Please be prepared at least 1 hour before your scheduled time. Events will not be scheduled to perform earlier than 8:00 AM on any day. Every effort will be made to schedule the last entry to perform no later than 8:00PM on Saturday or Sunday night.

Names, ages and birth dates of all dance athletes must appear on the electronic entry form or it will not be accepted. Dance athletes will be responsible for producing proof of age should any questions arise. Failure to do so may result in disqualification and forfeiture of awards.


Entry fees are non-refundable. With no exceptions, there are no refunds for entries that fail to perform at the competition. Entry fees are non-transferable to other dancers.


Any dance athlete participating in a Big Sky State Games event is understood to recognize the risks inherent in dance and dance performances. Participation in this conventions/competition indicates the acceptance of such risks by contestants and their parents/guardians. Big Sky State Games assumes no responsibility for personal injury or property loss at these events. Choreographers, teachers and performers automatically grant permission to Big Sky State Games to use their photos for publicity purposes in connection with promotional campaigns. Big Sky State Games will not be responsible for injury or loss of belongings. Big Sky State Games reserves the right to disqualify any contestants infringing on the rules.

Performance Rules

Prop Rule

For safety measures, a dancer may not be physically placed on a prop/scenic piece that is more than 6ft high. Fire, swords, knives and live animals are strictly prohibited on stage. No special scenery, lighting, smoke, dry ice or electrical devices may be used. Contestants are responsible for getting props on and off stage as quickly as possible.

Littering Rule

Substances which alter the condition of the stage are prohibited. No form of liquid, gel, aerosol, glitter, etc. may be used that would affect the dancing surface. In the event that the stage requires a break in the performance to clean off the stage, a cleaning fee will be charged to the studio. If the stage is damaged as a result of mis-use, the Studio may be liable for damages.

Routine Content and Sportsmanship

Dance Sports prohibits the use of inappropriate language backstage and in songs, vulgar gestures in routines, or non-age appropriate costuming. Failure to comply may result in disqualification. In the event that such a situation does occur, the issue will be addressed with the Studio Director. Disqualification is at the sole discretion of Big Sky State Games.

Sportsmanlike behavior is expected at all times. Failure to display proper decorum could result in immediate disqualification.


Routines that are not ready to perform will be skipped and forfeit all awards. A re-dance may be permitted at the request of Studio Director, however, the performance will be adjudicated and marked but will not qualify for awards. A re-dance is at the sole discretion of Big Sky State Games and reserve the right to refuse re-dances if time does not permit.

Backstage Rules

No parents or teachers, unless performing, are allowed backstage. Only one routine may be on deck and one routine in the hole.

Acrobatics & Lifts

Small lifts and props are allowed. Lip Syncing is permitted. Acrobatic moves and/or tricks, and tumbling are allowed. No stunting or high throws. Participants who are performing any acrobatic moves and/or tricks should have been trained appropriately in order to do these skills and at any time Dance Sport can pull a routine or disqualify a group or individual if safety is ever questioned.


If medals and awards are not picked up at awards ceremony they can be picked up at the Big Sky State Games office in Billings after April 19th. Medals and awards will not be mailed.

House Rules

Video & Photography

The use of recording devices of any kind is strictly prohibited in the theater. Big Sky State Games does not allow the use of audience photography or videography of onstage performances for the protection of our competitors. We urge all studio owners, teachers, and especially parents to keep our performers photographically safe. The use of cameras may lead to point deductions and/or disqualification.

Studios will be able to assign one video representative to film/photograph their entries only. The representative must film in the designated area and will have a badge.
