Modified Basketball Rules for Big Sky State Games Adult and Scholastic

  • Teams must be gender specific.
  • Players may not play on more than one team in the same division. Games will not be rearranged for players with scheduling conflicts due to playing in two different divisions.
  • Each team member must wear a numbered jersey or T-shirt. Arrive at the site dressed to play. No locker rooms or towels provided.
  • Tournament rosters must be identical to entry form roster; must be on roster to play. Roster are final before the first game. Each additional player after 10 is $20. Swapping players is free until July 8. After July 8, roster changes and additional players must be submitted at event site prior to first game - $20 per player will be charged. All roster changes are subject to approval.
  • T-shirts: A t-shirt claim letter will be sent to the team contact. The team contact will need to bring letter to Daylis Stadium on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to pick up shirts.
  • No Refunds!
  • Teams MUST bring own practice and game balls.
  • Scholastic Boys (7-12 grade) and Adult Men regulation 29 ½” to 30”; Scholastic Girls (5-12 grade), Scholastic Boys (5-6 grade) and Adult Women 28 ½” to 29”.
Game Info
  • Two (2) 20-minute halves with running clock except for the final 2 minutes of each half. Clock runs during shooting of free throws except for the final 2 minutes of each half. With a 20-point lead or more, the clock does not stop in the final 2 minutes of each half.
  • Five- minute warm-up, five-minute halftime. Bring your own warm up and game ball.
  • Two (2) time outs per game; additional one (1) time out for overtime. Clock stops during time outs for 1 minute.
  • Any overtime required will be two (2) minutes and the clock will be stopped.
  • Teams must check in fifteen (15) minutes before game by reporting to scoring table with a typed or printed team roster (with jersey numbers) prior to each game played.
  • A technical foul for unsportsmanlike or disorderly behavior will result in two points for the opposing team and loss of possession.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct is not acceptable. Officials can eject players due to technical fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • Coaches are responsible for the conduct and behavior of their teams’ fans.
  • Athletes and coaches are responsible for knowing, understanding and following the rules, policies, and code or conduct of their sport. Games organizers reserve the right to disqualify any participant from competition in the Big Sky State Games, for any reason, including, but not limited to: false representation, improper use of alcohol and/or drugs, destruction or property, unsportsmanlike or disorderly behavior or rules infraction.
  • Please extend a special thanks to the MOA Officials, timers and scorekeepers for volunteering their time.
Adult Division Specific Rules
  • Only two (2) NCAA Division 1 Members per team from one college.
  • Any team with 3 or more players that are currently or have played college basketball in the last 5 years must play in the elite division. All teams with professional athletes (played professionally in the last 5 years) must play in the elite division, regardless of the number of players per team. Big Sky State Games reserves the right to move teams to different divisions.
  • All other NCAA rules apply to Adult Divisions (Men’s and Women’s).
Scholastic Division Specific Rules
  • Divisions are based on the grade players will be entering as of September 2020 (players may play up but not down). Teams are subject to disqualification for players in wrong division.
  • All players on a teams roster must be prepared to show proof of grade level (example: Letter or email from school administration or report card) upon protest.

    2. Prostests will only be accepted from coaches.
    3. The protest must be registered with the gym supervisor.
    4. With division protest, the protesting team will be required to show proof of grade for each player as well.
  • 3rd/4th and 5th/6th grade division only – In addition to the rules above:
    • No zone defense allowed.
    • Can press last 2 minutes of the game, unless up by 10 points.
    • 3 pointers count if 3-point line is available.
  • All other MHSA rules apply to Scholastic Division.
