Rules & Regulations

General Information

The Triathlon and Duathlon are reasonably safe activities as long as certain guidelines are followed. Racing hard is fun and rewarding, but we must all race smart!

July in Montana can be brutally hot, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees fahrenheit. The adult individual and team race (13 and over) starts at 6:30 a.m. to avoid the heat of the day and church traffic (transition area opens at 5:30 a.m.). The duathlon will begin at approximately 6:35 a.m., no later than ten minutes after the triathlon begins. The youth race (ages 9 to 12) begins approximately at 9:00 a.m. If you hydrate, know the course, and are aware of the other competitors, the possibility of injury can be greatly reduced and the opportunity for personal achievement, greatly enhanced. Please remember that the roads are open to traffic. There are course marshals and volunteers on the course, but you still need to watch for cars and trucks (emergency vehicles and antelope, too).

Although not sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the Big Sky State Games Triathlon will be using the rules of USA Triathlon. For more information on rules check out USAT’s website, or become an annual member of the organization and receive a complete rulebook.

As a triathlete or duathlete, you are expected to be self-sufficient in your race. Big Sky State Games will provide two water stations on the run course. Course marshals will be available to assist, but no one else may provide you with aid. Bibs need to be on your outer most layer on the run and bike. The timing chip must be secured to your ankle. Teams need to transition the timing chip from ankle to ankle. If not on the ankle you are not guaranteed a time.

Dogs are not allowed at the triathlon and duathlon events.

Packet Pick-up

Race packet pick-up is at Lake Elmo on Saturday, July (TBA) (5:00 pm - 8:00 pm). There is no guarantee you will be able to receive your packet on race morning! Timing chips will be distributed with packet pick-up, and you must wear the timing chip race morning, or you will not have a time.

Adult and Team Triathlon Course

Onsite Pre-Race Meeting

6:20 a.m. – Lake Elmo Beach

800 Meter Swim Course

The swim is 800m in length. This is once again a mass start from the beach. There are two loops with a 100m beach run between laps. Slower swimmers should seed themselves in the back of the starting pack. It’s about 150m to the first turn buoy. This is a beginner’s triathlon; racers will be allowed to wear wetsuits with water temperatures up to 84 degrees at the racers discretion.

Transition Area

Upon entering the transition area, you will first put on your helmet and buckle it before grabbing your bike. The transition area is a NO RIDE ZONE. You will mount your bike at a designated spot just outside the transition area. You will dismount at this same spot when returning from the bike.

16 Mile Bike Course

Bike Course begins at conclusion of the swim course, inside Lake Elmo State Park near the boat dock area. Exit the transition area and take a left, proceeding past the Park entrance booth. Take a right at the corner of Rolling Hills Rd., proceed on Rolling Hills straight on to Pemberton. From Pemberton immediately take a left onto Main St. (the inside lane will be available for cyclists only), ride in the west inside lane. This lane will be coned off for the race. Traffic will continue in the east southbound lane. IF YOU GO OUTSIDE THE WESTLANE INTO ONGOING TRAFFIC LANE YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED! Take a left at the corner of Roundup Rd. and Main. Ride on the very wide shoulder of the road. Watch for traffic before crossing the road to ride in the direction of traffic. Continue 4.5 miles North on Hwy. 87. At the Shepherd Acton Rd., you turn right proceed to turn around and return to Billings on Hwy. 87 following the course in reverse. Ride with traffic the entire way back to Lake Elmo.

3 Mile Run Course

The 3 mile run is on dirt trails, beach sand, gravel, and paved roads. Participants will run on out and back on Lake Elmo Dr. and around Lake Elmo Park before finishing near the transition area.

Triathlete teams will race with the individual triathletes. If on a team, please identify yourself as the swimmer at packet pick-up.

Duathlon Information
